     THE ORDER OF THINGS

                          (For Stanley Keleman)

The order of things

revealing itself permits us

the freedom of rest --

this, then, is our world.

Mathematicians know it

among numbers, thinkers

among ideas, lovers

in the form of a body beloved

changing its shape over time.

Written, say the Arabs, and maybe it is

as the clusters of mulberries

make themselves into men.

Order! And here we stand

in the wild, buffeting wind

as the beating of each heart

measures Becoming and its end.
