  Old Times

I am looking

for a note from you

and "Seven Easy Dinners" comes up

on the screen and suddenly

I remember how we left

the food on our plates

that first night, coming

home to fuck. Say yes to all things

and they come back to bite you

on the ass. Why not? It is

days now and the message

you promised has not come.

Forty years younger, why should

you care? I thought you might

have grown fat but at lunch

you were slimmer than ever

and more beautiful. I am playing

the music I love, Bach sonatas,

on the stereo, but my heart

does not lift, and I eat

leftovers from the fridge --

stale chicken, dry cheese --

having learned at my age

nothing is easy: not dinner, not love.
