A Line In the Sand

If you're curious how military-coup deposed Pres. Manuel Zalaya came to be president of Honduras in the first place, just remember that when he first came to power he was a Right-winger, a leader of the "white" aristocratic oligarchy and business/military elite oligarchy, who, in mid-stream, changed his spots into a kind of New Left Bolivarian socialist, who began helping the common man there. This transformation, of course, set the wheels in motion for his eventual overthrow by the oligarchies.
I recently watched a debate between Lanny Davis and Greg Grandin in which Davis pointed out both the Honduran congress and supreme courts had more or less ruled against Zalaya's case that his overthrow was, at the least, illegal and unconstitutional. Grandin, unfortunately, although seldom without very knowing words, obviously let these charges go unanswered for which he had, sadly, no ready answer. That answer, of course, is that both his congress and court came along when he did and had never, themselves, broken faith with the coup leaders.

And now we find Pres. Obama is no longer able to identify a "coup." Strange, although he at first called it just that, but, quite naturally, after shopping his decision around Washington, found too many there were unwilling to have another "Chavez" in Central America. Lord knows it's bad enough news for America there's even one, perhaps more, in South America. Although the new agreement with Colombia for permanent American military bases there may proceed our armed attempt to short-circuit those-particularly Bolivia's, Ecuador's, and Venezuela's. Soak them in blood, as it were. Something we, in our decline, show an increasing penchant for. And, while I know, hope springs eternal, particularly in the hearts of mothers and fathers for their offspring, have no doubt America is in its decline. Surely, the kid may get his M.D., but what does he or she really have to look forward to-the oligarchies of the insurance money funnels, our ever bigger and more powerful military, the corporate duopolies of congress and the administration? Rome at its finest-or worst.
Well, of course, funny things happen on the way to the Forum. We had a glimpse of it just this year with the mortgage fiasco. The ramifications of all that may not yet be behind us. And no one around us is merely standing still attending our every breath. While the headlines here may mainly concern themselves with the latest child abduction in Florida, elsewhere, believe it or not, their respective publics may be hip to commercial media and more logically thoughtful and current than ours.
