La Plata County to consider re-opening Idaho Mine

I read on the 9News.com website today that La Plata County is considering allowing Wildcat Mining Corporation to re-open the Idaho Mine.
This really pushes my buttons. La Plata Canyon is my favorite spot on the planet, and when I imagine it lined with waste ponds, like these near the Climax Molybdenum Mine, my stomach turns.
You can see some of the beauty of the canyon in the"Brother Falls" photo essay on my website. I have written to the La Plata County Commissioners, asking that they not allow the mine to re-open, but it will take more than just my voice to make a difference. Please, if you're reading this -- especially if you are a La Plata County resident -- let the Commissioners know your opinion. Their contact information is on the linked page above.
I'm reminded of a poem I wrote back in 1987, while taking classes from our own Leonard "Red" Bird at Fort Lewis College:
"Mollie"
The high mountain Earth seeps
Blood-red mud
After her molybdenum
Rape.
The rapist does
Nothing but chuckle
And ask, "Did you
Climax?"

Fucking hippie....stay up @ Harvard on the Hill...
For what it's worth, I'm proud of the education I received at "Harvard on the Hill," and would recommend it to anyone wanting a well-rounded education from an institution where the professors actually care about the students.
