  MORNING

                                  (For Stanley Kunitz)

Morning

and the slow

sorrows of the night, the failures

of age, the resistence

of the flesh, fade

away. Twenty, again,

in the brightness of morning!

And in thought, where I thrive,

paths open out, horizons

beckon, the hint

of a god remains.

Released, like a bird!

I take the body with me

on this journey into light --

risen again, still singing.
